South Baghdad power generation plant was awarded to IFC in 2004 by Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, with a value of US$155 million. The 400MW plant was part of the government efforts to improve electricity supply in Iraq, and contribute towards distributing electricity more equitably throughout the country. The project consisted of Design, supply and deliver, erection, commissioning, handover and operating sixteen 25 MW E Frame 5 units.
Due to the circumstances and situation at that time a huge challenge was imposed to IFC, especially after the loss of twenty of its engineering and technical team in a single incident during a crucial time during the project execution. Nevertheless, the project was completed to the satisfaction of the Ministry of Electricity.
